March NW PA Fishing Report

Ice-out came unexpectedly early this year to PA Great Lakes Region. Early bird anglers have been on the lakes catching crappies and yellow perch as well as on the Allegheny River catching smallmouth bass. A few steelheads will remain in the Erie tributaries until late April. As waterways warm, fishing success for many species will pick up.

February NW PA Fishing Report

This has been a very confusing winter in Northwest Pennsylvania. Warm well into January, but ice finally comes on late, only to be followed by a complete thaw within two weeks. Ice off, then a polar freeze puts ice back on; steelhead streams froze, unfroze and froze again. Everyone is hoping the ground hog was correct with the call of an early spring to get us out of this off and on winter.

January NW PA Fishing Report

El Nino weather pattern carried mild weather along with open water fishing opportunities into early January, but winter has finally arrived. Smaller NW PA lakes are just this week achieving a safe thickness of ice for ice fishing. Larger lakes remain unsafe but prime ice fishing on these waters is just around the corner.
