Blade Bait Season is rapidly approaching. Are you ready? Blades are
effective for walleyes, yellow perch, largemouth bass, smallmouth
bass, hybrid stripers, crappies, white bass, bluegill, channel catfish
and muskies. Some of the most popular brand-name blades include
Heddon Sonar, Reef Runner Cicada, Silver Buddy and Vib-E. Most of
the shops on the Fishing Report carry blades, and probably have
their best selection available right now. As the water gets colder, Attach with duo-lock snap
success with blade baits increases. The trick with blades is to rig
them properly and not to over work them. I employ a 6 to 7 foot
moderately fast tip spinning rod spooled with 8 or 10 pound test
Gamma Edge fluorocarbon. I cut the line 20 inches up from the
end and tie a small power swivel inline to create a leader to the
blade. To the end of the leader, tie a quality duo-lock snap. To the
snap, attach the blade bait. Open the bail and free-spool the blade
to the bottom, engage the reel and take up couple inches of line so Blade working up and down
the blade is hanging just above the bottom. With the tip of the
rod pointed at the water surface, gently sweep the rod tip up-
ward until you feel the blade begin to vibrate. Stop upward
sweep and lower the blade back down. When you feel the
bite, sweep the rod tip up firmly and keep it high as you take
up slack.
Success!
