Dead-stick Soft Jerkbaits for Fall Transitional River Smallmouth Bass

Soft jerkbaits, known generically by many anglers as “flukes,” often excel at catching river
smallmouth bass during the fall transition.

During the summer, when feeding river smallies
most often hold in (or close to) shallow, fast current
areas, they respond well to aggressively fished Ra-
pala X-Raps and flukes. Conversely, by late fall,
when water temperatures are in the high 40s and
lower, bass will have relocated to deeper, protected
wintering holes. Mid-fall -- when water tempera-
tures run from around 60 degrees down to the high
