Gamma Tip from Darl Black
I grew into fishing during the early Trilene vs Stren line wars. I never picked a side
back then or promoted a particular fishing line – until Gamma Line came on the sce-
ne. Now I talk about Gamma on guide trips and seminars, and here in the Fishing Re-
port. Why? Because in my opinion Gamma’s Polyflex (copolymer) and Edge
(fluorocarbon) are best on the market. And its home headquarters is right here in NW
PA! I’ll let Gamma’s president Dale Black (and once again – no relation) explain the
particulars of how the line is treated to enhance its strength and manageability. But
plain and simple the treatment makes both the copolymer (basically monofilament)
and fluorocarbon more manageable and stronger than competitors’ line of the same
diameter. For example, Gamma’s 4-pound Polyflex actually breaks at about 8 pounds
even its diameter falls in the range of everyone else’s four-pound test. That’s the fea-
ture of Gama lines – high break strength for the diameter. It’s fantastic to fish with a
high break strength line with a smaller diameter for manageability. I use the four and
six-pound Gamma Optic Yellow Panfish (mono) on my crappie and panfish rods. Ten-
pound Green Polyflex goes on my topwater bass rod, and 12-pound on my swim jig
and spinnerbait rods. The six-pound Edge (fluorocarbon) will be found on my bass &
walleye jig rods and drop-shot rods. Ten-pound Edge is on my pitching stick. However,
I prefer Gamma Torque Braid on my frog rod, buzzbait rod, and grass jig rod rather
than either mono or fluorocarbon. Be sure to give Gamma try this season. Try it –
you’ll love it!
