Allegheny River
Jeff @ Keystone Connection Guide Service; filed 4/21: My guide trips experienced phe-
nomenal success prior to the mid-month deluge that blew out the Allegheny River. Doz-
ens of big smallies up to 21 inches. Galida’s Grubz and finesse-sized tubes accounted for
most of the fish. Some on hair jigs, too. Prior to the highwater event, we were experi-
encing the start of movement toward spawning areas. I expect that to quickly resume
once the Allegheny drops to a reasonable level. While the Allegheny has been a non-
option, we’ve managed some great smallmouth action on smaller reservoirs. (See pho-
tos below)

Pete @ SmalliesontheYough.com; filed 4-19: On April 9 , we found fish eating all over
the river – catching smallies, some pike and a few ‘eyes as well. The smallies were
chewing just about every lure we tossed at them including Rapala X-Rap and 412ubes.
Of course, we used Gamma Edge, but this year we dropped from 8-pound to 6-pound –
th
with no fear of the rocky Allegheny. On the 13 , I fished river again. Conditions were
great and bass were eating. I caught smallmouth between 16 and 21 inches. These fish
were fighting hard in current. (see photos below)
Steve Hughes; filed 4-19: We fished the Allegheny near East Brady on Saturday for a few
hours. Caught some good ones. One had a lamprey attached to it. Most had small
leeches on their fins. We were using Rapala’s new Square Bill Crankbaits with 14-pound
Gamma Edge, and tubes on 8-pound Gamma Edge. Gamma Edge is outstanding.
