Because so much of Pymatuning is very shallow, if unchecked hydrilla could overrun the
lake out to a depth of 8 feet or so.
Wilson went on to say the only thing they find within hydrilla beds are very young perch
and sunfish. Which of course raises another concern: over abundance of panfish that
cannot be held in check by predators, and therefore stunted panfish population.
Hall pointed out that State Park’s herbicide treatment is aimed only at invasive species
of plants but not directed at native aquatic vegetation.
Pymatuning is one of Pennsylvania’s finest inland fisheries and has remarkable balance
of prey/predator species. Hydrilla expansion runs the risk of upsetting that balance.
