Gamma Tip from Fishing with Darl Black: Drop-Shotting Summer Panfish

On many area lakes, big bluegills and big pumpkinseeds move to deep water for the summer,
setting up on hard bottom or rocky outcropping. These fish may be anywhere from 17 to 25
feet depending on the lake. One of the most efficient ways to reach these fish is with a simple
        drop shot rig.

I select a panfish rod with a slow tip but enough power in the butt. The B’n’M 7.5’ All Purpose

Crappie Wizard (CW75) is my pick. I spool the reel with 6-pound hi-vis Gamma Panfish Line. Be-
fore attaching a leader, I slide on a Blakemore Glow Bead then tie on a small power swivel. The
Glow Beads keeps clients from winding the small black swivel through the tip-top guide. To the
        swivel I attach a two-foot leader of 4-pound Gamma Line. Using a loop knot, I attach a 1/48-
ounce Bobby Garland Mo’ Glo head. At the end of the leader I tie on a cheap brass snap swivel.
Instead of expensive drop shot weights, I use bell sinkers. The snap swivel allows me to switch
weights as needed; a 3/16, 1/4, or 3/8 ounce weight does the job. The soft plastic on the jig-
head varies, but a Bobby Garland Baby Shad often does the trick.
