Allegheny River
Gene Winger (Oil City); filed 10-22: Over the past two weeks I’m finding bass are starting to
school up in predictable locations thanks to the lower water temperature
and shorter daylight hours. We’ve had some great days on the river but
nothing compared to this past Friday evening – the action was nothing
short of amazing. I started out throwing tubes and swimbaits, trying to
avoid all the floating weeds. But I wasn’t connecting with fish. So after an
hour I switched to a Winco 4.75 Solid Body River Darter on a 1/16-ounce
weighted EWG hook and dead drifted the lure in 4 to 5 feet of water at
Gene Winger photo the tail end of a large pool. Game on! In a matter of two hours, I boated
well over a dozen bass, all over 3 pounds with one going 20 inches and
weighing 4.25 pounds. Where the heck were these big boys all summer? (Additional photo in

Jeff Knapp @ Keystone Connection Guide Service; filed 10-22: I’ve run guide trips the majority
of days the past two weeks. In general, the action has been good – num-
bers of small bass, plenty of quality ones in the 15 to 20 inch range, and
some good walleyes in the mix as well. The action that past week has
been somewhat slower after the passing of the cold front on Sunday, Oct
15 – lots of cold frosty nights followed by bluebird sunny skies coupled
with clear water conditions. Some bass are still in summer spots, i.e.
close to fast water. But many are starting to show up in slower fall areas.
Fall spots are often covered with floating weeds and leaves, but you can
Jeff Knapp photo catch them by pitching a Texas-rigged Z-Man Hula Stikz. Expect most
bites to be on the initial drop, before the rig gets weeded up. And we’re
catching them off the flats on Rapala X-Raps and soft jerkbaits. As of Oct 22, the water temper-
ature was around 59 degrees. The late fall bite is right around the corner. Give me a shout to
book an outing. Jeff@keystoneconnection.com. (Additional photo in Livewell)
Al Bell (Franklin); filed 10-22: The fall walleye bite is beginning to happen. My friend Brian Per-
ry of Franklin has been doing exceptionally well on ‘eye in the Allegheny. Over the last week he
has caught several by dead drifting or jigging live creek minnows. Most ranged from 18 to 20
inches, however he released a 29 inch female ‘eye. As a knowledgeable angler, he certainly un-
derstands the importance of releasing a fish of this size. “The Continuance Plan” – great job
Brian! (See photo in Livewell)
Bill Logan (Pleasantville)
Oct 14: Fished the river after getting my motor fixed. Caught 6 bass on Dingers. One was a
skinny 14 inch largemouth – unusual for the river.
Oct 17: Windy day! Got six in a protected spot. Came on Dingers and Intimidator Tubes.
Four were in the 2.5 pound range.
Oct 20: Slow bite on Thursday. Got five bass, a pike and dink ‘eye. The wind was strong!
