much. Although we caught smallmouth and large-
mouth bass at Justus Lake, the numbers were
down and the size of fish weren’t picture worthy.
However, Mikey Galkowski did have an enjoyable
battle landing this 5-pound fish – which is some Mikey with Justus Lake sucker

What’s the best fishing picks for the coming holiday week? That’s both easy and difficult
to predict. The amount of water in some area lakes and the Allegheny River/French
Creek flowage from monsoon rains may disrupt some angler’s plans. But here’s some
suggestions:
1. Lake Erie for walleyes. There are still massive numbers of
legal walleyes in the lake, and they are hungry. If weather
permits (and you have a boat suitable for Erie), this will like-
ly be the hottest bite going in NW PA. No boat? Consider a
charter. Don’t forget the great smallmouth fishing on the
Big Pond!
2. Pymatuning for walleyes. Pymatuning has a good popula-

tion of legal walleyes in the 19 to 22-inch range based on
surveys. Dave Richter expects the night bite to continue. But
night fishing isn’t for everyone. Dave believes walleyes can
be caught drifting with jig & crawler on light breezy days if
you can find the outside edge of some deep weedbeds. An-
glers report many weed areas have been knocked down by
herbicide treatment aimed at hydrilla, but Dave says there
are still some deep milfoil weeds if you can find them

3. Lake Wilhelm for crappies and bluegills. Reports on crappies
from Pymatuning have been sketchy in the past month. But reports from Wilhelm
