Shenango River Lake & Shenango River
Rick Como (Sharpsville); filed 9-10: Fishing on Shenango the past few
weeks has been on the slow side for most species. High boat traffic on
weekends and mixed weather patterns have been the norm. This week-
end has seen a slowdown in boats and an uptick in fishing success. Lots
of white bass hitting on shallow water humps and points. There are
many small hybrid stripers in the 12 to 16 inch range running with the
white bass schools; care should be taken not to confuse the two species
as hybrid stripers must be 20 inches. Shallow running cranks are working
best for white bass. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are being caught
around schools of young shad; some bass are very respectable in size.

Channel cats are hitting on live bait. Crappies are being caught, but most
are only 7 to 9 inches. Walleyes are very spotty; I’ve caught a few in the
early evenings on humps but it is not consistent. As water temp drops this month and into Oc-
tober, fishing will consistently get better as fish begin to feed heavily before cold water period.
Jena @ Fish West PA; filed 9-9: I caught this 26 pound flathead catfish
from the Shenango River the other night. (See photo on Cover)
Randy @ Fish West PA; filed 9-9: Hybrid stripers have been slow all year
except for in June during the shad spawn. Shad population in lake is high
due to recent mild winters and low shad die-offs. You can catch stripers
at peak periods. Live shad anglers are picking some up. I managed a hy-
brid Monday morning before the rain started. (See photo)

- 8-31: I fished Shenango today. Bite was slow but the size was okay.
Kept 30 for a friend’s holiday fish fry. Most were shy of ten inches
with ten over ten. We fished a variety of depths from 3 to 12 feet.
Most came from brush in nine feet of water. Pourhouse Custom Jigs
in Nervous Wreck color took most.
- 9-8 Fished Shenango on Friday with my brother Rueben. Late start for us but we still
managed to have a pretty good day. Hang-glided fish attractors that COE put in this
spring. There’s a lot of fish using them; unfortunately most of them are small. We did
manage 18 over nine inches in the box. A good mix of long whites and thick blacks. Hot
Grubs on 1/16 ounce head were most productive. Water depth was 9 to 14 feet. Water
temp has fallen to 70 degrees as of today.
Marilyn Black (Cochranton); filed 9-4: Darl and I spent a few hours on Labor Day trying to fish
Shenango. But between 20 mph breeze and oh so much pleasure boat traffic, it was tough. We
