John Wilpula (Conneaut Lake: My son got to practice his jerk-
bait skills last week when we found largemouth bass willing to

nail a jerkbait over shallow water. He lost count on how many
            hooked.

            ERIE COUNTY

Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay & Tributaries
Mike @ Lake Erie Bait & Tackle; filed 5/20: Smallmouth bass are in the Bay. Lots of an-
glers chasing them. Reports I’m getting are the largemouth are biting better than the
smallmouth in the bay. Largemouth are back in Lagoons and Horseshoe Pond, Misery
Bay and Head of Bay. Anglers are catching a few perch early and late off the North and
South Piers, but it’s a brief bite. And they are getting walleyes in the lake in shallow wa-
ter when the it’s not blowing too much.

Kirk @ East End Angler; filed 5/20: Smallmouth are being caught in the main lake and
they are in the creeks as well. Lake trout fishing is hot and heavy with fish coming from
65 feet to 112 feet off North East. Walleyes are along the creek mouths along the shore-
line east of Erie. Also getting walleyes on the North and South Pier and at East Avenue
Ramp – just about any place you can get to the shoreline to cast, anglers are getting
walleyes. Perch are a no-show right now.

Jeff @ Poor Richards; filed 5/20: Boat anglers are picking up walleyes in 8 to 20 feet of
water along shoreline on West Side of Erie. There are a few ‘eyes being taken from
shore, but the winds have not been favorable. Temp along shore warmed to 52 degrees
a couple days ago which is prime, but then the big wind knocked it back to 46 degrees
on Sunday night. Smallmouth are in Elk Creek but not in the numbers of previous years.
Stream water sill cooler than normal. A new state Record Lake Trout was caught off
North East; angler and boat crew brought the fish here to have it weighed and certified.
Poor Richards is having it mounted and it will be on display in the store at some future

date. (See Lake Trout photo in Livewell)
